General Information

In the Beginning...

Alpha Gamma Rho was started as a colony on the University of Tennessee at Martin campus in 1960. Alpha Upsilon gained chapter status in 1963 due to the hard work of our founding 20. Thanks to their foresight, Alpha Upsilon has thrived because of the standards that they set. Alpha Gamma Rho is a social-professional fraternity in which all of its members have some kind of relation to agriculture. This gives us a tighter brotherhood with our common bond.

Rules to Live by...

Here at Alpha Upsilon, the brothers have unique guidelines that help us to become better men. Many people who are not brothers, find these regulations strict, but if you ask any brother or alumni, he would not have it any other way. Some thing that are unique to us include:

  • We are one of the few chapter houses in the nation that is dry. No alcohol is allowed on the premises and anyone caught with an open container is subject to expulsion. This also means that we do not host any Greek parties. We find that this helps keep our house in excellent condition.
  • No females are allowed in the dorm part of the house except on special occasions in which we have an open house such as Homecoming, Rush, and Founder's Day.
  • We have a housemother. Ms. Toon has been with us since 2002 and is one of our greatest assets. She helps keep us in line and gives us someone to talk to and receive advice from. She's not your mom at home, but she's as close as it gets when you have to stay away from your own home.
  • All of our brothers are required to live in the chapter house. There are a few exceptions. A couple of brothers live with their parents in town. Also, brothers are not required to live in the house if they are married, not a full-time student, or a re required to live in the dorms because of a scholarship.
  • We have a new chapter house that we moved into in 1997. It has enough room to house 52 men and we often enjoy a full house. We have heard of incoming freshman who tell people that they "sure would like to stay in that big house on University St." Our house has everything that a college student could need from meals to the internet. It is all included in one house bill. It is actually cheaper to live in the chapter house than stay in the dorms.

These are just some of the things that makes Alpha Gamma Rho special.
